Reflection on the Understanding Comics Reading-
The comic reading was very interesting especially because I have always been into comics and the simple stories they tell. It is interesting to break down why our eyes understand drawn subject matter the way they do. And in fact simplicity is more expectable and easier to get the message across. When the artist should what he really looked like it was astonishing to see the difference it made on the message he was trying to convey. I am glad that he did not choose that imagery of himself because I do not think I could have taken it seriously.
Another interesting aspect was the use of realistic backgrounds and simple human figures. As an artist, background is always something you struggle with because it is the most difficult to “fake”. This article solidifies my struggles because according to the writer, he says the human mind only sees what’s there not what we want you to see. For example it is easy to tell that a circle with two dots and two lines underneath them is a face. Backgrounds however, are very subjective and vary. They need to be realistic for the viewer to be engaged in the story.
Differences in realism and simplicity were also varying between cultures. The Japanese’s for example use extreme detail in certain situations to suggest the weight or physical aspect of the object. Rather than to imply it like many artists in American and European comics do. As a designer these facts of art also translate to social facts that can help you in designing commodities. This article helps you understand the beauty of simplicity and that everything does not need to be complicated to be visually appealing.
